It can help with body image anxiety. Now, her latest work puts vulvas and vaginas in the spotlight thanks to her new book Womanhood: The Bare Reality and forthcoming Channel 4 documentary: Vaginas. And when women share intimate photos and deeply personal experiences relating to their vaginas, the result is a tender yet taboo-exploding message of women reclaiming their womanhood. I think a part of me was shying away from that intimacy because I would have to address my own related experiences. The correct language and understanding of female genitalia is so important to me: the vulva is the whole external package, the vagina is a muscular tube which leads from the cervix the neck of the womb down to the vulva.

Why is it so hard to call a vagina a vagina, and a vulva a vulva? | The Eve Appeal
One of our favorite things about the last year alone is the number of woman-driven odes to pussy power—literal and otherwise—that we've enjoyed. Now, Jessica Kersten and Sandrine Le Goff, co-founders of creative agency Cloudfactory in Amsterdam, are making their contribution to cunt canon, with a limited-edition book and art project called Vaginas Untold. This isn't vaginas in abstraction, like Bodyform's bathroom graffiti. Porn is the first thing that comes to mind: It's where our heads go when we think of exposed genitals, especially close-ups of vulvas. But often, porn packages women for male consumption, with bodily contortions and submissions serving as a metaphor for submission of personhood and complexity. It's the ultimate distillation of the male gaze, and shadows of this lowest common denominator linger in every reading of female movement in public—at work, with friends, while eating, even while being a child. First it was breasts , then penises — now photographer Laura Dodsworth has taken portraits of vulvas. She tells Liv Little why. T owards the end of last year, I published an essay about my vulva — in a book, and then in the Guardian. I felt a deep sense of shame about my body, which over time became crippling. In a book and accompanying film for Channel 4, she tells the stories of women and gender non-conforming people through portraits of their vulvas.
Across the course of a year, Laura took photos of the vulvas for her book Womanhood: The Bare Reality, and spoke to each person about what their vulva means to them. Some of the women involved have also been featured in a film for Channel 4 called Vaginas. Then she examined masculinity by photographing penises for Manhood. And after that, Laura considered the project complete.
